Walking Fest 2016

The Festival will run from Saturday 27thAugust until Sunday 4th September 2016 inclusive and will cover all areas of Dartmoor and is open to everybody of all ages and abilities. It will be very clearly marketed as ‘Dartmoor on your Doorstep’ with this chosen time of year being the last week of the summer holidays encompassing the August Bank Holiday weekend to start it off and ending in the first week of September. This will hopefully allow our visitors to stay on the extra week in order to enjoy all that Dartmoor has to offer and also to encourage our locals to come out on the moors before the children go back to school.
Our aims are much wider than just walking. There will be climbing, Nordic walking, evening presentations, taster sessions in all sorts of activities and much more.
We are arranging four events each day during this nine day festival, ranging from modest guided strolls and children’s rambles to full day walks and ambitious challenges,  to suit all tastes and abilities.  There really is something for everyone!
Making use of the local cycle trails will mean that those who use mobility scooters and ‘Trampers’ can also come along and enjoy Dartmoor.

The Dartmoor Search and Rescue Group is also supporting the week and, if you have ever wondered what they do out in the dark when searching for missing walkers, then come and join them on an evening exercise to learn more!
Off course you can also download from the internet many of the walks both leisurely or more strenuous and experience all the Moor has to offer to suite your own itinery.

Don’t forget a car ride across the Moors is also an alternative, there are many villages to stop and have a cream tea if walking is not your thing.

In case you need convincing, here are some photos taken on the moor by husband and wife Gillian and Derek Cranch. They love the Moor, go up most weeks and photograph views. These photos are then attached to cards and sold for their local church fund, St.Johns, Shiphay, Torquay. https://www.stjohnshiphay.org.uk/

For visitors to holiday homes in Shaldon we have a few in the office if you are interested.
