Why visiting the beach is good for your health and wellbeing

We are blessed with beautiful beaches here in South Devon, and we encourage as many people to visit them as we can when staying in a holiday cottage, Shaldon.

We have already touched on how walking on the beach can be good for you, but did you know some of the other great benefits you can experience when visiting the beach? We have taken a look at some of these below.

Taking in the rays

Many of us get confused when we see that big yellow ball in the sky, as the weather in Great Britain can be very unpredictable. However, when it does make an appearance, the sun can be very beneficial to you, providing you wear the correct sun protection.

Exposing ourselves to the ultraviolet rays found in sunshine provides our bodies with vitamin D, which helps promote strong bones. Your hair and fingernails will also benefit greatly, as they will grow much faster and stronger than they used to. Sunlight can also help our complexions, repairing blemishes that are found on the skin, but do respect the sun and take care not to suffer from overexposure.

Fancy a dip?

Taking a dip in the sea is great exercise, regardless of what activity you take part in, but did you know that sea water can also be very beneficial to your health? The salt and water combination work brilliantly for your skin, as the water dries out your skin and the salt acts as a natural exfoliant which both help your complexion.

The sea also contains levels of silicon, which can help to tone the skin, leaving it looking and feeling much younger. Iodine can also be found in sea water, which helps keep to strengthen your hair and give it an added shine.

Visiting the coast

Being located on the coast means you can gulp in the beautiful coastal air, which contains much higher levels of oxygen than the air found inland. This extra oxygen helps you to feel a sense of rejuvenation, whilst also benefitting your muscles, organs and skin.

A survey also found that people voted the sight of the sea as one of the most stress relieving sights, with watching and hearing the waves break on the shore being a very therapeutic and relaxing experience.

These are just a few ways getting on the beach and in the sea can benefit you, so whilst you’re visiting South Devon, you are safe in the knowledge that Mother Nature is providing you with many great benefits!

Decembers Festive Events in Shaldon

How to do Christmas in Shaldon.. The right way!  Decembers Festive Events  We should probably start with Shaldon’s newest addition to good coffee, wine and dinner. Relocating across the road from the Coffee Rush, ‘The Clifford Shaldon’ is where you need to be on those chilli evenings. Our personal favourite is an Espresso Martini, made by the man himself Dominic. The Clipper stands in one of the most idyllic locations in Shaldon, right on the beach. So grab yourself a mulled wine, some Christmas gifts and enjoy the breath-taking views of the River Teign. www.theclippershaldon.co.uk   If you have the little ones with you then a must visit is the Shaldon Zoo. Their ‘Magical Christmas Weekends’ are not to be missed with Santa’s grotto on the December 9th,10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th. For its size, this small but perfectly formed zoo offers an amazing experience for the kids, with animals such as Golden lion tamarins, Yellow-breasted capuchins, Ruffed, Ring-tailed and Fat-tailed dwarf lemurs, Madagascan giant jumping rats, Pied tamarins, Azara’s agoutis and many more. www.shaldonwildlifetrust.org.uk The Shipwrights Arms is a short level walk and has Pete Burrows playing on the 16th December at 9pm and Carol singing with Jude Rose and Company on the 23rd December at around 6.30 to 7pm , after the carol singing  Guy Stockwell is playing at 8.30. www.shipwrightsshaldon.co.uk   Another one for the lovers of great music. Our local lad Ollie Stephens is performing his album launch in the stunning St. Peter’s Church. All of us here in Shaldon have already purchased our tickets so make sure you do not miss this one. Wednesday 20th Dec at 7pm. www.olliestephens.com    The Build Up Sat 23rd Dec at 3pm the Crib and Christingle Service is held at St. Peters Church. Because Christingle was specifically created with children in mind, it’s a real family oriented event but can be enjoyed by people of all ages – even if you don’t regularly attend St Peters. www.shaldonchurches.org.uk   The Big day It’s Christmas, Do whatever makes you feel jolly!  We love a crisp walk whilst the Turkeys Roasting; with options of Shaldon Beach, The Ness, or The South West Coastal Path. Of course with a stop at the local pubs for a Hi and Hello to all the festive faces. Whatever your plans, Shaldon village is the perfect place to be.   Boxing Day Have you got your fancy-dress outfit sorted? Well if not you best get a wriggle on. The Boxing Day fancy dress three- legged race is not something to be left to the last minute. Starting point this year is at the Ness. The route covers each of Shaldon’s hostelries. Registration is at the Ness from 10.30 am, judging of costumes at 11.45, and the Race starts at 12. Anyone can enter or go and watch. Entrants run, walk or crawl around the village pubs, enjoying a quick half pint (or squash for children) and the first team back wins! www.shaldonwatercarnival.co.uk  ...

Supermoon- Low tide

  Last nights supermoon ( perigee syzygy ) was a full moon or a new moon that approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, the distance that the Moon reaches to Earth in its elliptic orbit. It appears to be slightly bigger and brighter than normal. The furthest point in its orbit is called the apogee. The New Year skies will be brightened up by two appearances in January. The Old Moon or Wolf Moon on   January 1-2 and the Blue Moon on January 31. The River Teign was still tricklling out when this was taken on December 4th. It looked like you could walk to Teignmouth.  ...
